Exclusivity vs. Artistry

I used to think that it was pretty cool to like an artist that nobody really knows about. I guess we all think that from time to time. But, as those artists grow, both for themselves and in popularity, we often feel that they lose their special something about themselves, regardless of whether or not we keep listening to them. After a lot of thought, I think it’s ridiculous. I mean, at one point do you draw the line? How many known listeners is “acceptable” before they aren’t cool anymore. I see people bitch about bandwagoners all the time, but how much could you really appreciate that artist if you’re only in it for the exclusivity of it all? If you truly enjoyed their music, wouldn’t you want them to grow in any way that betters them or makes them more successful what they do? I don’t see why not. I’m not leaving out the fundamental difference between selling out and garnering popularity. It’s understandable if an artist tweaks their style in a more “mainstream” way for the sake of their popularity, but even then, if it was their personal choice, why hold them against it? I just think it’s absurd for people to spend so much time hating on other for listening to the same music. Just listen to what you like. Damn.
